@ESPNTennis: US Open Series Starts in Atlanta on Road to New York; Nadal on ESPN3 from Hamburg

ESPN’s exclusive coverage of the Emirates Airline US Open Series starts this week in Atlanta with the ATP BB&T Atlanta Open, the first of eight hard-court events (four ATP, three WTA, one combined) across North America in five weeks. ESPN3 coverage from Atlanta is daily, totaling 30 hours, while ESPN2 airs a semifinal Saturday, Aug. 1, at 4 p.m. (ESPN3 has the other at 8 p.m.) and the championship on Sunday at 3 p.m.   Tom Rinaldi will call the action alongside Patrick McEnroe with Brad Gilbert courtside. Defending champion John Isner is one of three Americans among the top seeds, joined by No. 3 Jack Sock and No. 6 Steve Johnson.

In addition, ESPN3 has weeklong coverage of the ATP German Open Tennis Championships from Hamburg, including Saturday’s semifinals at 7 a.m. and Sunday’s championship at 7 a.m. Rafael Nadal leads the field at this clay court even.

The US Open Series continues next week with the WTA Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, Calif., starting on ESPN3 on Monday, Aug. 3.

 

@ESPNTennis:  Mylan World TeamTennis Conference Championships Thursday on ESPN3; Finals Sunday on ESPN2; Washington Seeks Fifth Straight Title
The 40th season of Mylan World TeamTennis concludes this week with the Eastern and Western Conference Championships on Thursday, July 30, at 7 p.m., and the finals live on ESPN2 on Sunday, August 2, at 1 p.m.

The Washington Kastles – with the superstar team of Martina Hingis, Leander Paes, Venus Williams and Sam Querrey – have secured the No.1 spot and home-court advantage for the East and are seeking the first ever five-peat in professional team tennis. The Kastles’ opponent could be determined tonight in a match between The Philadelphia Freedoms – joined by 2015 Wimbledon quarterfinalist CoCo Vandeweghe – and The Boston Lobsters.

For the West, the Austin Aces clinched the top-seed and will be playing their first postseason match in franchise history on their new home court at Gregory Gymnasium at The University of Texas, joined by the California Dream who confirmed a place in the conference championships in their debut year in the league.

The winners of Thursday’s matches will meet for the Mylan WTT Finals on Sunday, August 2, live on ESPN3 at 11:30 a.m., with ESPN2 joining the action at 1 p.m.

As I write this on 11-11-21, it's now 35 years for me at ESPN, the only real job I’ve ever had. I joined merely to help with the upcoming America’s Cup in Australia. I was told it would be for three months at all of $5.50 per hour. I like to say I simply kept showing up. I’ve worked on almost every sport, plus answered viewer calls and letters (people used to write!), given tours, written the company newsletter and once drove NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon to the local airport. My travels have been varied…I’ve been to Martinsville, Darlington, Indy and Super Bowls; the America’s Cup (all 3) in San Diego and College GameDay in the sport’s meccas such as Eugene, Auburn, Lubbock, Stillwater and more; the NBA Finals, Wimbledon (16 times and counting) and the “other Bristol,” the one with a race track in Tennessee. These days, my main areas are tennis, UFC, boxing, network-wide ratings (by month/quarter/year), and corporate communications documents, including fact sheets, chronologies, lists and nearly 35 of the Year in Review press releases. UPDATE EXACTLY ONE YEAR LATER: Today, November 11, 2022, I am retiring from ESPN -- 36 years to the day I began. As I ride off into the sunset – top down and E Street Radio blaring – I do so with so many wonderful memories, proud of my contributions and a heart full of gratitude for the opportunity.
