College Football and Sports Betting Analyst

Steve Coughlin, affectionately known as “Stanford Steve,” is a College Football and sports betting analyst for ESPN, a member of College GameDay Built by The Home Depot, and a contributor and regular guest on the midnight SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt. Coughlin, who joined the College GameDay cast in 2023, travels to campus sites each week during the football season where he contributes to game breakdown, sports betting analysis and game picks. Coughlin is also a regular contributor to Friday editions of College Football Live and Saturday morning SportsCenter shows prior to GameDay. 

A collaborator and close friend of Scott Van Pelt for nearly two decades, Coughlin has been a producer and on-air contributor to SVP’s midnight SportsCenter since it debuted in September 2015. He appears on “Bad Beats” and “Where in the World isn’t SVP?” segments, and together they co-host the SVPod podcast   

Coughlin previously wrote for ESPN.com and his work on ESPN podcasts goes back to 2014 when he contributed to the Behind the Bets podcast during the college football season and in 2015 when he began hosting Behind the Bets, The College Years. Coughlin began his ESPN career as a production assistant in 2004, and he spent 11 years with ESPN Radio. During that time he started working with Van Pelt on the SVP & Russillo show in 2009. 

A native of Ansonia, Conn., Coughlin attended Stanford University where he majored in Communications and was a four-year player on the football team. He played tight end and was part of the Cardinal squad that reached the 2000 Rose Bowl.
