Dan Murphy

Dan Murphy is a staff writer in ESPN’s Investigative and Enterprise Unit.

His was a member of ESPN’s reporting team that won a Peabody Award for its coverage of sexual abuse at Michigan State and USA Gymnastics. His work has also won an IRE Sports Investigation of the Year Award. Murphy has also been nominated for an Emmy Award and been named a finalist for the APSE National Beat Writer of the Year for his extensive reporting on the changing landscape of college sports.

In 2026, Murphy was the reporter for the ESPN E60 documentary Fear and Doping in Las Vegas, a look at the controversial Enhanced Games.

Murphy is the co-author of the award-winning book Start By Believing: Larry Nassar’s Crimes, the Institutions that Enabled Him, and the Brave Women Who Stopped A Monster.

He came to ESPN in 2014 as a college football reporter and joined the company’s investigative reporting team in 2019. Murphy graduated from the University of Notre Dame and received a master’s degree from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism. He lives in Boston, Mass.
