Two WNBA Games Part of ESPN’s Day-Long Coverage of Women in Sports Programming

ESPN will televise two WNBA games, Saturday, June 23, as part of the company’s day-long programming highlighting women in sports across its networks – ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3, ESPN Classic and Longhorn Network. Presenting some of the league’s biggest stars, coverage will begin with the Chicago Sky vs. Minnesota Lynx at 12:30 p.m. ET, followed later that evening with the Los Angeles Sparks at Phoenix Mercury at 9 p.m. The offerings culminate the company’s three-month multiplatform initiative, The Power of IX, recognizing the 40th anniversary of Title IX, signed June 23, 1972.

Highlights:

  • Pam Ward and Carolyn Peck will have the call of the Chicago/Minnesota game and will be joined live by the father of Title IX, former Senator Birch Bayh (via satellite), and WNBA great Cynthia Cooper.
  • Terry Gannon, along with Rebecca Lobo, will be joined live onsite from the LA/Phoenix game by soccer star Hope Solo and Phoenix Mercury vice president Ann Meyers Drysdale.
  • Both games will take an in-depth look at the Title IX legislation and its meaning for both the past and future of women’s sports.
  • Title IX facts and a look back at some of the greatest moments in women’s sports history will be integrated into the telecasts.
  • Sound from some of the greatest women’s sports athletes, including past and present WNBA icons and the legendary Billie Jean King, as well NBA stars Grant Hill and Steve Nash.
  • Chicago’s dynamic duo of Epiphanny Prince and Sylvia Fowles will take on former UConn star Maya Moore of Minnesota, while L.A.’s Candace Parker will face Phoenix.
  • The four teams will commemorate the day by wearing special uniforms with “IX” on the front of the jerseys, while player names and uniform numbers will remain the same on the back.
  • ESPN soccer analyst and espnW contributor Julie Foudy will host the day’s studio shows with former collegiate and WNBA women’s basketball star Sheryl Swoopes

More than 180 hours of women in sports programming will be aired on June 23, including 11 live hours on ESPN beginning at 12:30 p.m.

A part of the Internal Communications team at ESPN, I began with the network in 2010 as part of the College Sports PR team. Always an avid sports fan and not an athlete – I grew up a huge fan of the Hartford Whalers, while also watching my brother compete at different levels. I became the manager of several high school sports teams and continued that hobby into college. While at Quinnipiac, I worked in the Sports Information Department, which led me to a summer internship at the New Haven Ravens, a AA baseball team, and an eventual job with the Athletic Communications Department at the University of Connecticut. After my five-year stint at Connecticut, I spent six years as Director of Communications at the BIG EAST Conference in Providence, R.I. before joining ESPN.
