Tennis’s Emirates Airline US Open Series moves north of the border this week for the Rogers Cup – the ATP in Toronto and the WTA in Montreal – and ESPN3 started daily daylong coverage today with ESPN2 joining Friday for 20 hours – also available on WatchESPN – through Sunday’s back-to-back championships. Chris Fowler leads the ESPN Tennis team, with Darren Cahill, Brad Gilbert, Sam Gore, Pam Shriver and Rennae Stubbs.
Serena Williams – winner of Sunday’s US Open Series final at the Bank of the West Classic in California – will defend her Rogers Cup title against a field that includes Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova seeded No. 2, plus Maria Sharapova, Sunday’s runner-up Angelique Kerber, Agnieszka Radwanska, Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic, Victoria Azarenka and emerging star Eugenie Bouchard of Canada, recent Wimbledon finalist.
The men’s field is led by Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer as top seeds, with defending champion Rafael Nadal sidelined by injury. The field is stocked – Australian Open winner Stan Wawrinka, Tomas Berdych, Andy Murray, David Ferrer, and Wimbledon semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov. Big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic – also a recent Wimbledon semifinalist and winner of the Citi Open Sunday in Washington, D.C., is the No. 6 seed.
Overall, ESPN2 is televising 84 hours from the US Open Series – five weeks of hard-court tournaments across North America leading to the US Open – including eight of the nine championships. All the TV action is also available online at WatchESPN.com, on smartphones and tablets via the award-winning WatchESPN app, and streamed on televisions through ESPN on Xbox LIVE to Gold members, Apple TV, Roku and Amazon Fire TV to more than 92 million households nationwide via an affiliated video or internet provider.
