ESPN’s exclusive coverage of Wimbledon continues with the Ladies’ Championship and a battle of generations with a list of historic milestones on the line for No. 1 Serena Williams when she faces vs. No. 20 Garbine Muguruza – a 21-year old, 6-footer from Spain – on Saturday, July 11, at 9 a.m. ET.
The two have played three times, with Muguruza shocking the all-time great 6-2 6-2 in the second round of the 2014 French Open. The pairing presents a long list of contrasts:
- The 33-year old American Williams is considered by many the greatest female player ever, powered by the universally acclaimed best serve in history. She has won 20 Major championships, including the last three – a win tomorrow would secure her second “Serena Slam” (she won four straight 2002-03) and the third leg of a rare calendar year Grand Slam. She is 20-4 in Major finals, including 5-2 at Wimbledon (where she also won Olympic Gold in 2012).
- The 21-year old Muguruza of Spain has caught the eye of many in the tennis community in the last 18 months as a potential star, rising from a ranking of 64 at the end of 2013. After defeating Williams in the 2014 French Open, she reached the Quarterfinals, falling to Maria Sharapova, the eventual champion. This year, the six-footer lost in the Round of 16 at the Australian Open (losing to Williams in three sets) and in the Quarterfinals of the French Open.
Breakfast at Wimbledon starts the day at 8 a.m. with host Hannah Storm. Highlights:
