ESPN will televise the National Football League’s first regular-season game in Mexico City in 11 years on Monday Night Football on Nov. 21 – Houston Texans vs. Oakland Raiders from Estadio Azteca. Multiple ESPN studio shows will be live from Mexico City on Nov. 20-21 as part of the company’s extensive English and Spanish-language coverage, both in the United States and on ESPN networks in Spanish-speaking Latin America.
On-site plans include 10 hours of studio coverage and the first regular-season road show for ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, which debuted in 1985. Chris Berman will host Countdown (11 a.m. ET) from a set location at Chapultepec Park, site of the NFL Fan Fest, in Mexico City with analysts Trent Dilfer, Matt Hasselbeck, Randy Moss and Charles Woodson. On Monday, Berman and Suzy Kolber will co-host the two-hour Monday Night Countdown pregame show (6 p.m.) from Estadio Azteca leading into MNF. Two-time Super Bowl-winning Raiders quarterback Jim Plunkett will be a special guest on-set.
Other ESPN shows originating from Mexico City include Sunday and Monday morning editions of Hannah Storm’s SportsCenter Face to Face, SportsCenter on the Road with Sage Steele, and Monday’s NFL Live with Trey Wingo and analysts Herm Edwards and Darren Woodson.
“The NFL’s return to Mexico on Monday Night Football is a signature event of the season and the perfect opportunity for us to bring Sunday NFL Countdown on the road for the first time,” said Seth Markman, ESPN senior coordinating producer, NFL studio shows. “We expect big, enthusiastic crowds and are looking forward to working with our ESPN Deportes colleagues based in Mexico City.”
ESPN’s Monday Night Football team of Sean McDonough (play-by-play) and Jon Gruden (analyst) will call the Texans-Raiders game (Nov. 21, 8:15 p.m.) with reporters Lisa Salters and ESPN Deportes’ John Sutcliffe, who lives in Mexico City.

On ESPN Deportes, multiple Sunday shows will feature reports from Chapultepec Park, as will Cronometro and Nacion ESPN on Monday. The game will be preceded by a special NFL Esta Noche and a post-game SportsCenter produced from Estadio Azteca with live reports from outside the stadium, the NFL Fan Fest in Chapultepec Park and the studios.
NFL Esta Noche will be led by ESPN’s Eduardo Varela and Pablo Viruega alongside former NFL standout Roberto Garza. The NFL Live team includes former wide receiver Marco Martos, a Mexican who played in preseason games for the Panthers, Broncos, and Cowboys – the last two teams brought him to play at Azteca in 1997 and 1998 respectively. Former NFL players Ramiro Pruñeda, Mauricio Lopez “Tyson” and Gustavo Tella will also serve as analysts alongside hosts Kary Correa and Miroslava Montemayor.
The Spanish-language MNF telecast on ESPN Deportes and in Latin America will feature Alvaro Martin (play-by-play) and Super Bowl-winning kicker Raul Allegre (analyst) with reporters Ciro Procuna and Sergio Dipp.
The game will also be broadcast on ESPN Deportes Radio with play-by-play voice Kenneth Garay, analyst Sebastian Martinez Christensen and reporter Antonio Valle.

We are putting all our resources towards offering the best coverage possible, including featuring iconic locations in Mexico City and leveraging our state-of-the-art studios opened last December.”

ESPN International will carry the game across 61 countries/territories in Spanish-speaking Latin America, Brazil, the Caribbean, Canada and Australia/New Zealand/Pacific Islands.
On game day, ESPN in Mexico and Central America will present more than 15 hours of NFL content, including a Toque Inicial produced outside the studios overlooking Estadio Azteca, two editions of NFL Live and SportsCenter produced from the stadium and a pregame NFL Esta Noche. Additional content on local ESPN2 and ESPN3 will be produced from ESPN’s new studios in Mexico City and from Bristol, Conn. ESPN3 will also simulcast the game in English, giving Mexican fans the option of watching ESPN’s U.S. telecast.
ESPN Digital and Marketing
In addition to ESPN’s television coverage of this historic game, ESPN Digital will feature multiple stories on ESPN.com and ESPNDeportes.com throughout the week, including features on Mexican football and the viability of a NFL franchise in Mexico City, plus game coverage from ESPN’s NFL Nation team reporters Sara Barshop (Texans), Paul Gutierrez (Raiders) and Alden Gonzalez, who will travel to Mexico City.
ESPN Marketing will debut a new MNF advertising spot on Monday, Nov. 14, promoting the Texans-Raiders game and the planned studio coverage on ESPN and ESPN Deportes.
NFL in Mexico City
Texans-Raiders will be the first Monday Night Football game in the 47-year history of the series to be played outside the United States. ESPN televised the last NFL regular-season game in Mexico City 11 years ago as part of its previous Sunday Night Football package. The October 2, 2005 matchup (San Francisco 49ers vs. Arizona Cardinals) was played in front of 103,467 fans at Estadio Azteca, the largest crowd in NFL regular-season history at that time.

Ediciones especiales de SportsCenter, NFL Esta Noche y NFL Live desde México por ESPN Deportes y ESPN México; El primer show remoto en la historia de la temporada regular de Sunday NFL Countdown y SportsCenter on the Road;
El lunes, 21 de noviembre a las 8:30 p.m. (hora del Este de EE. UU.), ESPN y ESPN Deportes televisarán el primer partido de la temporada regular de la NFL en 11 años en la Ciudad de México, con una edición especial de Monday Night Football entre los Houston Texans y los Oakland Raiders.
Diversos programas de estudio de ESPN se transmitirán en vivo desde la Ciudad de México, los días domingo 20 y lunes 21 de noviembre, como parte de la extensa cobertura en inglés y español de la cadena, tanto en los Estados Unidos como en las cadenas de ESPN en la Latinoamérica de habla hispana.
“Nos emociona llevar a los aficionados en los Estados Unidos y en toda Latinoamérica la cobertura del regreso de la NFL al Estadio Azteca”, dijo Rodolfo Martinez, vicepresidente de producción de ESPN Deportes y ESPN International. “La creciente base de aficionados de la NFL en México tiene altas expectativas con respecto a este sensacional partido. El partido de los Texans y los Raiders será el primero en los 47 años de historia de Monday Night Football en jugarse fuera de los Estados Unidos. ESPN televisó el último partido de la temporada regular de la NFL en la Ciudad de México como parte de su anterior paquete de Sunday Night Football. El encuentro del 2 de octubre de 2005 —entre los Fortyniners de San Francisco y los Arizona Cardinals— se disputó en el Estadio Azteca frente a una multitud de 103,467 aficionados, lo cual constituyó la máxima concurrencia en la temporada regular de la NFL en aquel tiempo.
Aspectos salientes en la programación de ESPN Deportes:
- Varios programas del domingo incluirán reportes desde el Parque Chapultepec, como también lo harán Cronómetro y Nación ESPN el día lunes. El partido será precedido por una edición especial de NFL Esta Noche, seguido por SportsCenter con el análisis posterior al partido, producidos desde el Estadio Azteca, con tomas en vivo desde fuera del estadio, el “NFL Fan Fest” en el Parque Chapultepec y los estudios.
- El equipo de NFL Live incluirá al ex receptor abierto Marco Martos, futbolista mexicano que jugó en partidos de pretemporada para los Carolina Panthers, los Denver Broncos y Dallas Cowboys, siendo estos dos últimos los equipos que lo trajeron a jugar al Azteca en 1997 y 1998 respectivamente. Los ex jugadores de la NFL Ramiro Pruñeda, Mauricio López “Tyson” y Gustavo Tella también participarán como analistas junto a las conductores Kary Correa y Miroslava Montemayor;
- Los veteranos comentaristas de ESPN Eduardo Varela y Pablo Viruega, junto al ex astro de la NFL Roberto Garza, conducirán NFL Esta Noche previo al partido;
- La narración del juego será liderada por Álvaro Martin (relator jugada a jugada) y el pateador de los NY Giants y campeón del Super Bowl Raúl Allegre (analista), junto a Ciro Procuna y Sergio Dipp reportando desde el campo de juego.
Medios digitales y marketing:
- Los aficionados pueden deleitarse con videos, metraje detrás del a escena, análisis, rasgos salientes, la cuenta de los diez primeros, reportes desde el campo, sesiones en vivo por Facebook y un segmento digital en vivo de la NFL conocido como “En corto”
- com y ESPNDeportes.com presentarán numerosos artículos durante toda la semana, incluyendo material sobre el fútbol mexicano y la viabilidad de una franquicia de la NFL en la Ciudad de México.

- El área de marketing de ESPN llevará a cabo una campaña bilingüe para promocionar el partido de Monday Night Football y la cobertura desde estudios por ESPN y ESPN Deportes.
ESPN Deportes Radio
- ESPN Deportes Radio transmitirá en vivo el partido de Monday Night Football desde el Estadio Azteca. El comentario “jugada a jugada” estará a cargo de Kenneth Garay, en tanto que el analista Sebastián Martinez Christensen y el reportero de campo Antonio Valle relatarán el partido in situ.
- El encuentro se difundirá por las 43 afiliadas de ESPN Deportes Radio, las cuales cubren el 71% del mercado hispano estadounidense, como así también su canal SiriusXM.
Aspectos salientes de la programación de ESPN:
- Habrá 10 horas de cobertura televisiva in situ y será el primer show remoto de la temporada regular de Sunday NFL Countdown de ESPN, que debutó en 1987.
- Chris Berman conducirá la sesión de Countdown desde un escenario en el Parque Chapultepec (sede de la “NFL Fan Fest”) de la Ciudad de México, juntamente con los analistas Trent Dilfer, Matt Hasselbeck, Randy Moss y Charles Woodson.
- El lunes, Berman y Suzy Kolber conducirán conjuntamente el show de dos horas Monday Night Countdown previo al partido en el Estadio Azteca como prólogo de Monday Night Football.
